The courtroom is deserted. In the distance, a tiny character is trying to line up symmetrically the huge chairs. It’s President Anna Conforti. It ’s been a few days since she pronounced the last verdict of her life as a judge. Anna is my mother. Since I was a child, the feeling that there was no little secret that “the president of the court” would not have discovered, has led me to deny her any access to my emotions. Everything she has ever known about me, she had to guess it from the movies I’ve started making since I was a little kid. Now that she’s retiring the fear of my mother getting old without ever really knowing anything about me, pushes me to film her. But an unexpected event disrupts the balance. My mother undergoes surgery for breast cancer. Her wish to know me, to know that I am capable of being happy, gets stronger, and so does my need to fulfill it. The beginning of my first important relationship is the chance to try and open up, coming out from that comfort zone behind the camera where I’ve been hiding since I was a child. The Age of Innocence is the story of a sentimental education told through my subjective camera.

OUTLAND

by Michael Schindelm

HD, color, 88', 2021

co-production with RSI Radiotelevisione Svizzera Italiana

original version: english, german, italian subtitles: english, german

The starting point of the documentary is the conviction of the author (a citizen of Ticino since 15 years) that the landscape between St. Gotthard and Chiasso still represents a magical parallel world, a land that inspires, welcomes, and even protects those who come to live their lives on their own terms.

Reconnecting to the life in Ticino of Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings – the founders of Dadaism – the film focuses on some of those who in recent years have arrived in Ticino and decided to stay, walking the thin line between breaking or making it.

They are a dancer from Siberia who integrates shamanic practices into her craft. A Kurdish bus driver who translates Machiavelli’s “The Prince” into his mother tongue. An Iraqi artist and his dead brothers. A teacher from Transylvania, and her Californian husband who has been writing a book for twenty years. A painter with Taiwanese roots, who reminds her husband of a wisteria. Just like Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings, the founders of Dada, they were all inextricably drawn to Ticino, yet never quite settled… In Outland.

Caught! Despite her violin missing two strings, she pleads with Uhler to let her play. In a deceitful plan, Jakob Uhler agrees and offers Emma the opportunity to play in his concert hall – because maybe a shameful performance will finally make the girl stay away. Desperate to find a replacement for her missing strings, Emma gets increasingly into trouble until even her violin’s remaining two string break. Emma’s dream of a self-determined future threatens to shatter forever.

“PAUL NIZON: THE NAIL IN THE HEAD” tells of the radical life-search by the Swiss writer Paul Nizon, born 1929 in Bern, Switzerland, who became what “he was meant to be” in Paris. Now 90-year-old, Paul Nizon grants insights into his life and work in a self-ironic, direct manner. The intimate portrait of a great literary outsider emerges, for whom the risk of life and the risk of writing merge into one and the same work of art.

In the Italian town Omegna an unusual industrial center was born in the twentieth century: the so-called “houseware district”. The sister companies like Bialetti, Alessi and Piazza exploited the post-war economic boom and became known worldwide. Following economic crises, generational changes, globalisation, relocations, and the workers’ struggles, the golden years ended drastically leaving an immense void not only in the abandoned establishments but also in the hearts of the local population.

Alberto Casiraghi and Josef Weiss are true bibliophile artists. One in Osnago, the other in Mendrisio, they have been dedicating themselves for years to valuable editorial and typographical activities, still printing with mobile characters, preserving the memory of a perfect ingenuity made of manual skills and technique, but also of inventiveness and poetry. They seem to be living with their work, characterised by care, quality and beauty, in a world aside, far from the frenzy of contemporary society, a microcosm which persists and resists by virtue of the passion and pragmatism of a craft, of the breath of poetry. This encounter with these remarkable figures has become a declaration of love for thought and art.

A simple film. A man, a woman, a child. A small town. The square apartment. Perfect sundays. The story of a young family. The ceaseless labor of love out of which emerges what is later called the soul of a person. Creating the cradle of love that nurtures the child’s evolving soul. Affection and distance. The father’s career at the local police department and the mother solely devoted to caring for the child. The violence between husband and wife. We watch as this woman sinks and how she does everything she can to save this child’s soul, to keep it intact, to let it grow, to teach the child love. It’s a Sunday afternoon. The scirocco wind blows pitilessly upon Palermo when Rosa and Clara, two women arriving to celebrate a friend’s wedding, get lost among the city streets and end up in a sort of cul-de-sac: Via Castellana Bandiera. At the same moment, another car driven by Samira, in which the Calafiore family is amassed, arrives in the opposite direction and enters the same street. Neither Rosa at the wheel of her Multipla, nor Samira, an ancient and stubborn woman at the wheel of her Punto, intend to give way to each other. While the Calafiore family withdraw into the illegal building where they live and organise a gamble, with the complicity of the neighbours, on which one of the two women shall hold her position longest, Clara decides to leave the Multipla to continue her discovery of Palermo on the scooter of Nicolò, the youngest in the Calafiore family, who escorts her willingly. Evening falls, then night penetrates within the street and the neighbourhood houses, but the two women, resisting hunger, sleep and thirst, seem to be obeying a stubbornness holding no more rationality and persist in not yielding way to the other…

Münsingen. The night is quiet, and black. Friedrich Glauser, the legionnaire, Dadaist and morphine-addict writer, reviews the sum of a failed life. Flashes of memory recall his childhood in Vienna, his father, who did not understand him, his mother, who died when he was 4 years old and for whom his love has remained intact. Moments of the past appear like iridescent bubbles, they grow, grow and refuse to pop. Writing is his white magic, with which he erects a bridge between the madhouse and the world, morphing into stories and above all into detective novels. He created a positive father figure with the persona of sergeant Studer, which would make him famous. On regaining his freedom, Glauser fled from Switzerland, to lead a troubled and errant life with his partner Berthe Bendel between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. But the further he departed with a desire to create a new existence, the more his cruel and merciless past returned. He died aged 42, the day before his wedding.

The documentary tells the unprecedented twenty-year story of Chögyal Namkhai Norbu - one of the last great reincarnate teachers to be trained in Tibet - and his Italian born son, Yeshi’s, stubborn reluctance to follow in his father’s footsteps. When Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche escaped Tibet in 1959, he settled in Italy, where he married and had two children, of which Yeshi was the first. Yeshi was recognized as the reincarnation of Rinpoche’s uncle, a famous Dzogchen master, who died after the Chinese invaded Tibet. Yeshi grew up in Italy and never wanted to have anything to do with this legacy. He didn’t want to be a Teacher like his father, nor did he want to return to Tibet and the monastery of Rinpoche’s uncle, to meet the students waiting for him since his birth—something that his father continually admonished him to do. Instead, he dreamed of a normal life, away from the hoards of devoted students that always surrounded his father. Through intimate scenes we see a young man grow from 18 years old to 39 years old and maturity; and a father who begins the story in his 50 year-old prime turns to 70 years and old age. As the story unravels what is at stake is Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche’s spiritual tradition; for Yeshi it is his own identity. Will Yeshi’s Western lifestyle replace his family tradition and his spiritual roots? Will his father succeed at transplanting the vanishing Tibetan heritage to the Western world? The stories of both the father and the son combine in a universal drama that taps into the classic narrative of family and inheritance. As time passes, both father and son begin to change, giving the film the scope and depth of great fiction.

A man returns to his homeland for a funeral. The bodies of his parents were discovered in a mass grave. Someone who returns home after twenty years is looking for answers. War, however, does not offer answers, it produces questions. The home he had left was lived in by other people and then abandoned. The walls of the house bear signs of violence, of memories. Looking at the rooms, the man searches for the meaning of the events. Memories overlap with the worn out images on an old video tape- the every day routine of a town that could have never fathomed war. In his own way, the man begins to question the meaning of the words home, roots, escape, war, exile, future and peace. He discovers that “maybe the only real truth is that my town has not changed, that it has stayed the same, waiting for me, without haste. Almost as if it knew that sooner or later I would have returned, to come to terms with the past.“

VOGLIAMO ANCHE LE ROSE aims to portray the deep change brought on by the sexual revolution and the feminist movement in Italy during the 1960s and 1970s. The film looks again at recent events from a female point of view, through the first-hand accounts provided by the diaries of three women. Anita, Teresa and Valentina come from different Italian regions and different social backgrounds, but share the same feelings: they no longer feel part of a society based on the patriarchal family, on the power of “husbands” and on the supremacy of males, which requires them to be efficient mothers, obedient wives and virtuous daughters. The Italy in which these stories are unfolded is not as distant in time as it may seem, and its cultural and social conquests not as firmly rooted as one would think. By focusing on the battle for women’s rights in Italy, the film addresses the struggles for equal rights worldwide, past and present, in the belief that no battle won can be taken for granted forever.

DUTTI DER RIESE is the first film which focus in detail on the personality of the Migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler, the man who divided 20th century’s Swiss society: a convinced democrat - but with the temperament of a dictator - a visionary and at the same time a realistic and calculating person. A war profiteer in his youth, thereafter a humanist, a powerful popular orator and a social politician. Swiss patriot and convinced European, Robin Hood, attentive husband, fighter, grouser and player, he became - toward the end of his life - a dubitative spirit. The figure of Gottlieb Duttweiler is today much more topical than he could never have imagined in his crazier dreams.

21st century Egypt, spurred by the rallying cries of a global clash of civilizations, risks drowning in a xenophobic frenzy. MARY, a grandmother, and her daughter (the filmmaker) join efforts to give Mary's grandson, Nabeel, a glimpse into possible alternatives: the family's 100-year history of mixed marriages. Like many Egyptians, after a century sprinkled with multiple immigrations, a few conversions and a few mixed marriages, Nabeel is a mix of Egyptian, Italian, Palestinian and Lebanese with some Russian, Caucasian, Turk and Spanish; from his Moslem, Christian and Jewish descendants he inherits a track record embracing socialism, fascism, communism, nationalism, feminism and pacifism. But as the grandmother weaves her way through the family fairy tales, she bumps into her own fears and the continued silence shrouding one branch of the family grows distressingly louder. In an act of solidarity with the Palestinian people dispossessed by the creation of the Jewish state of Israel in 1948, Mary has been boycotting her Egyptian Jewish family in Israel for 55 long years. Inspired by the telling of her own stories and the fresh perspectives her 10-year-old grandson brings to them, she and her loving, eclectic circle engage in the breaking of arguably one of the most vicious taboos in modern Egypt.

Ventura, a Cape Verdean laborer living in the outskirts of Lisbon, is suddenly abandoned by his wife Clotilde. Ventura feels lost between the dilapidated old quarter where he spent the last 34 years and his new lodgings in a recently-built low-cost housing complex. All the young poor souls he meets seem to become his own children. EXTRAIT DIALOGUE Nha cretcheu, my love, being together again will make our life beautiful for another thirty years. As far me, I will come back full of love and strength. I wish I could give you a hundred thousand cigarettes, a dozen of those fancy dresses, a car, the little lava house you’ve always wanted, a four-penny bouquet. But above all else, drink a good bottle of wine, and think of me. Here it’s all work. We’re over a hundred now. I still don’t have anything from your hand. Maybe I will soon… Sometimes I’m afraid of building these walls, me, with a pick and cement and you, with your silence.

Nine stories through which we follow the most significant events of this harrowing experience: the enactment of the racial laws in Italy, the futile escape attempts, the deportation, the separation from other family members, the miraculous survival in Auschwitz, and liberation with the arrival of the allied soldiers. Words that we may not be hearing for the first time, but which narrate the many aspects of these tragic accounts: from the most intimate and personal to the more notorious and cruel. These individuals, through their testimonies, are not afraid to reveal feelings of tenderness and compassion, as well as moments of happiness. Mimmo Calopresti made this film by viewing and selecting from the hundreds of Italian testimonies collected in the archives of the USC Shoah Foundation Institute for Visual History and Education, as well as archival footage and photographs taken from the personal photo albums of the survivors.

Forty years after “Siamo italiani”, the author devotes himself to several of the “foreign workers” who flocked to Switzerland from southern Italy. The young couples of that period have retired and are now back in their homeland Apulia, enjoying the fruits of their working days abroad – while yearning for the visits of their children who live in Switzerland. It is not only the second generation Italians in Switzerland who feel as if they are “half-Swiss, half-Italian”: some of the former migrants, though they have returned to Apulia, find that in their thoughts they are “still in Switzerland”. “I am constantly missing something”, says 40- year old Anna. “Distance and desire tear at the heart” – is how 65- year old Tonuccio sums up the migrant's lives.

Life has shown me nothing but contempt. Living in ghost houses other people left empty. I’ve lived in houses not even a witch would live in! But I’ve been in houses thet were worth it....All the houses I’ve lived in where illegal. I’ve paid more for things I didn’t do than for those I did do.

As a result of court proceedings the female narrator/protagonist/director is forced to relive the memories of her revolutionary past and conduct. In her efforts to defend a man caught up in the wheels of “mediatised” justice, she receives support from one of the old revolutionary leaders of that period, Oreste Scalzone. He continues to practise and defend the credo of those early days, obsessed by the need to keep their meanings free from betrayal and criticism. Reflecting on the past, the narrator goes back to the selfless way her father accepted her revolutionary stance and showed understanding, inspite of his suffering. Shortly before his unexpected death she suceeds in expressing her gratitude. In the mean time the idea of a film began to take shape. The bond with Giorgio Bellini, the man caught up in the court proceedings, has been strengthened by the desire to capture it on film. Memory can be used as a path to free the mind from the dead weight of old resentments, through the power of love…
